Description: Air Quality Managements Areas.Since December 1997 each local authority in the UK has been carrying out a review and assessment of air quality in their area. This involves measuring air pollution and trying to predict how it will change in the next few years. The aim of the review is to make sure that the national air quality objectives will be achieved throughout the UK by the relevant deadlines. These objectives have been put in place to protect people's health and the environment. Description: Historic buildings and archaeological sites of national importance are given legal protection by being placed on a ‘Schedule’ of monuments. Historic England identifies and advises on these monuments, which are placed on the Schedule by the DCMS. Examples of Scheduled Monuments are Roman remains, burial mounds, castles, bridges, earthworks, the remains of deserted villages, and industrial sites. Scheduled Monuments can not include ecclesiastical or residential buildings (except for associated caretaker’s dwellings), and unlike Listed Buildings they are not assigned grades. The data is downloaded on a monthly basis. For more information, contact Geoff Saunders on x47561.Last Updated: 1 August 2024
Description: The Authorised Landfill Sites Dataset is a sub-set of the Agency’s Waste Management Licensing data, store on the Regulation Information System (REGIS). The Authorised Landfill Sites dataset consists of a digital map layer which shows landfill sites in England and Wales. The polygon records created from all waste management licences that have a licence type (LIC_TYPE) of LF, A01, A02, A04, A05, A06, A07, L04, L05, S0901, 5.2A(1) a) and 5.2 A(1)b).The eastings and northings of the Authorised Landfill Sites dataset make up an national grid reference (NGR) that is either the location of the site entrance or the site office.Landfill records contained within the dataset from 1961 to present. Landfills remain in this layer until their licence is surrendered, revoked or expiers. At this point they are removed and entered into the Historic Landfill Sites dataset. For more information, contact Sonia Gallaher on x47570.Last Updated: 11 December 2023, by Environment Agency.

Description: East West Rail (EWR) is a project of national significance aiming to deliver new and enhanced rail infrastructure to provide frequent, fast, and reliable rail links for communities between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford, and Cambridge. To protect the planned route of the railway from conflicting development, the Secretary of State for Transport has safeguarded land required for the EWR project using Safeguarding Directions. The Safeguarding Directions were issued by the Secretary of State for Transport on 14th November 2024. The Safeguarding Directions came into force on 14th November 2024 and apply to any application for planning permission not finally determined by that date, where the planning application land falls within the safeguarded area. As a result, relevant LPAs, including Bedford Borough Council must consult EWR Co on any planning applications covered by the Safeguarding Directions before determining those applications. It should be noted that as the Safeguarding Directions apply to undetermined planning applications, as well as new planning applications, your authority must therefore review all pending applications to determine whether the development proposed is a development to which the Safeguarding Directions apply. For more information, contact planning@bedford.gov.ukLast Updated: 14 November 2024

Description: This is a national assessment of flood risk for England produced using local expertise. The dataset shows the chance of flooding from rivers and/or the sea, based on cells of 50m. Each cell is allocated one of four flood risk categories, taking into account flood defences and their condition. No more detailed resolution is provided.Last Updated: 9 February 2024, by Environment Agency.
Description: The Flood Map for Planning Service includes several layers of information. This includes the Flood Zones data which shows the extent of land at present day risk of flooding from rivers and the sea, ignoring the benefits of defences, for the following scenarios:Flood Zone 1 – Land having a less than 0.1% (1 in 1000) annual probability of flooding.Flood Zone 2 – Land having between 0.1% - 1% (1 in 100 to 1 in 1000) annual probability of flooding from rivers or between 0.1% - 0.5% (1 in 200 to 1 in 1000) annual probability of flooding from the sea, and accepted recorded flood outlines Flood Zone 3 – Areas shown to be at a 1% (1 in 100) or greater annual probability of flooding from rivers or 0.5% (1 in 200) or greater annual probability of flooding from the sea.Flood Zone 1 is not shown in this dataset, but covers all areas not contained within Flood Zones 2 and 3.Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) use the Flood Zones to determine if they must consult the Environment Agency on planning applications. They are also used to determine if development is incompatible and whether development is subject to the exception test. The Flood Zones are one of several flood risk datasets used to determine the need for planning applications to be supported by a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and subject to the sequential test. The Flood Zones are a composite dataset including national and local modelled data, and information from past floods. The Flood Zones are designed to only give an indication of flood risk to an area of land and are not suitable for showing whether an individual property is at risk of flooding. This is because we cannot know all the details about each property. For more information, contact Sonia Gallaher on x47570.Last Updated: 25 March 2025, by Environment Agency.

Description: The Impact Risk Zones (IRZs) are a GIS tool developed by Natural England to make a rapid initial assessment of the potential risks posed by development proposals to: Sites of Special Scientific (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), Special Protection areas (SPAs) and Ramsar sites. They define zones around each site which reflect particular sensitivities of the features for which it is notified and indicate the types of development proposal which could potentially have adverse impacts.Natural England. Source data is the SSSI boundaries, these are buffered and attributed with info that reflects NE evidence for potential of development activity to likely impact the features of designated sites.
